Requiem Benefit for Haiti orphans

RantWoman always enthusiastically supports musicians making music for a really good cause and the event below organized by the Northwest Mahler Festival definitely falls in that category.

Dear Musicians,

In response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Haiti, the NorthwestMahler Festival, in collaboration with local organization SeattleMusicians’ Haiti Benefit Project, Orchestra Seattle, and in conjunctionwith Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral, will host a Haiti orphan benefitgala concert featuring the Brahms German Requiem, 7:30 PM SaturdayFebruary 13, 2010 at the Saint Mark's Cathedral.
Directed by George Shangrow, conductor and music director of OrchestraSeattle and the Seattle Chamber Singers, the Requiem will be presentedwith full chorus, orchestra and vocal soloists. Donations will becollected at the door and all proceeds will go to ‘Friends of theOrphans’, an internationally recognized non-profit specializing intransforming the lives of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged childrenby creating families for life through values of unconditional love, sharedresponsibility, education and medical assistance to the poorestcommunities in Haiti.

The event is open to the public and we especially encourage any stringplayers and singers interested in participating, (especially singers), tojoin us.

You must register in order to participate so we can keep an accurateheadcount. All string players and choristers are welcome to participate. Wind and brass players - given the rehearsal time constraints, spacelimitations and balance issues it is necessary to limit personnel to asingle player on each part and to assign the players. At this time wind,brass and percussion parts are already mostly filled. Final partassignment decisions will be made by Friday February 5, 2010. We realizethat some of you won't be able to play this time but strongly encourage you to otherwise participate in the chorus or the audience.

Orchestral performance music will be available at Saint Mark’s on the dayof the gala concert courtesy of Orchestra Seattle. In the mean time you may download a copy from ‘imslp.org’. Choral music is also available atthis link as well under ‘vocal scores’.

There will be orchestra and chorus rehearsals at Saint Mark’s Cathedral from 3:30PM-6:00PM followed by a 75 minute break prior to the performance.All participating musicians must plan on attending the rehearsal. Dressfor the performance will be concert black for orchestra and chorus. Please refrain from wearing any perfume, cologne or scented hairspray. All orchestra members are requested to bring a stand and lights.
