Yesterday RantWoman went to a perfectly lovely book reading at her house of worship. The featured title: a wonderful book published by a very small press. RantWoman would SO like to have a copy of the book. RantWoman would so like to support the publishing venture nvolved. And RantWoman is so NOT into buying things when her only purchase option is print.
RantWoman knows perfectly well that she could buy a copy of the book and engage someone to read it to her. RantWoman is seriously into peace and love, but RantWoman sometimes prefers not to test this affection with too much interaction with actual humans.
RantWoman could also buy a copy of the book and scan it herself. RantWoman COULD do this but has no interest in that level of enslavement to technology.
RantWoman could ask that the book be recorded by Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. Among other constraints, that actually means buying TWO copies of the book too. Never mind.
RantWoman can also figure out how to request books be added to the NLS BARD site. The official answer is on the BARD FAQ page at
https://nlsbard.loc.gov/FAQ.html
Part of the answer is as follows:
It is useful to contact NLSDownload@loc.gov if you think you have discovered a title missing from a series, a duplication, or some other kind of inconsistency. The information will be forwarded to appropriate NLS staff for action.
BARD is not a books-on-request service, but, following long-standing NLS policy, patrons are encouraged to bring their reading needs to the attention of NLS by contacting their regional or subregional library. The librarians will then query NLS and report back to the patron.
RantWoman notes that her regional NLS library is the Washington Talking Book and Braille library http://www.wtbbl.org/ The book RantWoman heard about was published in OR for an international distribution and
RantWoman supposes that some other path to accessible formats might be most appropriate in this case. RantWoman will put investigating more options on her already overcrowded to-do list.
