The good news: Impressive Young Intern who recently left the Friendly Neighborhood Center for Extreme Computing for a job in online retail got to come to the Friendly Neighborhood Center's... holiday party.
The bad news: Impressive Young Intern got to come to the party because the minions of Online Retail have not yet gotten their ducks lined up as far as the assistive technology tools Impressive Young (former) Intern needs to work productively. Impressive Young Intern does not get paid unless he can actually clock in and do work, but he cannot do work without the right tools.
Impressive Young Intern is not the first assistive technology user RantWoman knows of who starts a new position eager to buckle down and settle in only to find weeks and months of bureaucracy about assistive technology standing between them and productivity. RantWoman, cough, notes particular thrift on the par of Online Retail entity: in other cases, assistive technology users still get paid even though they cannot be productive. In the case of Online Retailer, Impressive Young Intern is on the hook every day to do the next step in organizational buck-passing. He does get paid for that; he is otherwise on the hook as far as time and big changes in daily routine. But he is not getting paid, and he won't get paid for all of that until Online Retailer gets their act together.
RantWoman is doing the best she can just to cheerlead as Impressive Young Intern wades through the bureaucracy. RantWoman recommends that Online Retailer not push their luck!
