Webinar of the Month: Section 508 core competencies

RantWoman recomends:

The winner of the RantWoman Webinar of the month prize: the webinar described below.

SECTION 508 BEST PRACTICES WEBINAR: LEADERSHIP CORE COMPETENCIES

RantWoman content appreciation:

--All of the IT leaders in the federal government who spoke communicated genuine caring about making progress and meeting their obligations for accessibility under Section 508. They said, with small variation, the same things RantWoman often says when asked about accessibility:

--pick a known standard. In the case of the federal government and federal contractors, Section 508 is chosen for them but still.

--Address compliance by building it into application development at every phase of work.

--A staffperson wanting to file a complaint may be a GOOD thing. One of the speakers recounted a time when one of his employees approached him about an accessibility issue and said he was considering filing a Section 508 complaint. The manager listened and identified a problem that the vendor agreed to fix in the next release of their software. After the new release of the software came online, other employees with disabilities also spoke up about how much difference the change made.

The Archives pages also includes links for several subjects such as Accessibility. RantWoman was impressed by how comprehensive the links were.

RantWoman process observations.
--RantWoman quite appreciates efforts to make the event accessible for screen readers as well as for deaf people. RantWoman notes the following points related to this:

--There are several options for promoting access to deaf people; sometimes a typed transcript AND a sign language interpreter are both topical. For many deaf people English is actually a second language; may students and people who lose hearing as adults often much prefer the transcription options.

--Technical difficulties happen. Part way through the webinar there was some issue with feedback and the mic system for the sign language interpreter. All assembled spent a few minutes listening while the people coordinating the call tried to adjust.

--There was a whole page of screen reader instructions. RantWoman alas, did not devote much time to the instructions. RantWoman had good intentions. The instructions and had a number of elements that sounded extremely sensible to RantWoman. For example there was nice guidance about how to select a subset of the screen items one plans to interact wit hand ignore the rest. download all the software.... RantWoman quite appreciates the detailed instructions. Unfortunately RantWoman early on decided that she was probably not going to be able to spend the time needed in advance for top function. RantWoman was glad to be able to download the content of the Powerpoint slides and to dial in.
