Accessibility and the Arts Event June 14, Downtown library
I would like to invite you to attend a special event with keynote speaker Rep Cyrus Habib on Saturday June 14th at 12:30PM. Vision Loss Connections is hosting this event to Celebrate the Importance of Accessibility to Arts and Sports in our Blind and Low Vision Community! We partner with Cleo Brooks and the Seattle Library Equal Access Program to present this program in the Microsoft Auditorium at the Central Seattle Public Library, 1000 5th Avenue, Seattle WA 98104. We are honored to have Rep Cyrus Habib who promotes the importance of Braille literacy by talking about how he went from Braille to Yale. He is recently elected to the Washington State House of Representatives, an attorney at Perkins Coie and a Rhodes Scholar.
Several United Bllind of Seattle and WA Council of the Blind Members will take part in this very special celebration. Quincy Daniels will be singing Wonderful World, along with Meka White and Alan Bentson performing numbers from Porgy and Bess which is the next Audio Described Musical at the 5th Avenue Theater. Blind Artists including UBS Members Becky Bell, Terry Blankenship, Camille Jassny and Ann Fagan, who worked on the Braille Faces Project will be spotlighted! The Braille Faces Project is a Commissioned Public Art Installation that will spell ART in giant Braille Lettering with Sculpted Faces which reflect the vibrant diversity of our Community! Stacy Thurston, Leyah Saylor, Ezzie Hernandez, Chariie White and Shalease Anderson along with Hjylimar Hinn & Tony Brown have been working diligently on the Braille Faces Project.
Celebrate Accessibility will feature the Visually Impaired Youth Arts Access Program and work created by the Tactile Art Group. Celebrate Accessibility is also an official Olympic Day Event featuring two past Paralympians who were part of the United States Association of Blind Athletes Team. WCB Board Member Gloria Walling will be talking about her experiences competing in Gymnastics, Goalball, and Track and Field in the Seoul Paralympics! Deng Kong will talk about Seattle’s Ski for Light Program and Nelly Barnett from White Cane Entertainment will talk about ACCESS to FUN!
