As CCN Member, we would like your participation in an upcoming Poverty Simulation!
Individuals experiencing poverty can encounter barriers to receiving services and information before, during and after a disaster. As with other vulnerable
populations, this can lead to disproportionate outcomes should a disaster occur. Public Health – Seattle & King County and Seattle Office of Emergency Management in partnership with the Vulnerable Populations Operations Workgroup and the King County Public Education Steering Committee is looking to join community-based organizations, emergency managers, PIOs, first responders, and human service planners in King County at this event to support whole community planning and coordination in all phases of an emergency.
What is a poverty simulation?
This poverty simulation, facilitated by WSU extension, is a guided experience that exposes participants to the realities of poverty, including the challenges of navigating the complexities of multiple systems and accessing essential services. During the simulation, participants assume the roles of up to 26 different families facing poverty and 20 service providers. The task for each family is to provide basic necessities and shelter during four 15-minute weeks, while balancing the requirements of various service providers with the realities of daily life.
Why attend?
· Interactively gain a deeper understanding of barriers related to poverty before, during, and after a disaster
· Opportunity to share perspectives and expectations across fields (community-based organizations, emergency managers, PIOs, first responders, and human service planners)
· Work together during the exercise debrief to begin formulating strategies
· Develop partnerships and identify community resources which can be leveraged in the event of a disaster.
The exercise is scheduled to take place on July 15th at the Renton Community Center from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided! Depending on your role assignment, you may be asked to arrive at 8:00am.
