Community Mobility and Universal Design / Seattle Design Festival

The Northwest Universal Design Council and King County Mobility Coalition invite you to attend "Community Mobility & Universal Design", a Seattle Design Festival event that will explore Universal Design principles that can enhance community mobility. The 2014 Seattle Design Festival theme is “design in motion.” A number of workshops during the two-week festival will focus on transportation; however, Community Mobility & Universal Design may be the only one that focuses on mobility for all—all ages and all abilities. I hope you will consider coming to the workshop, and participating in the discussion regarding mobility challenges.
Here are details for your calendar:
Event: Community Mobility & Universal Design (Seattle Design Festival)
Date: Sunday, September 14, 2014
Time: 12:30–2:30 p.m.
Place: Seattle Public Library, Downtown, 4th Floor, Meeting Room 1
The first 30 minutes focuses on a resource fair. The 90-minute program runs from 1:00–2:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. No RSVP is required; however, if you require an accommodation in order to participate, please e-mail me (irene.stewart@seattle.gov) at your earliest opportunity.
Read on, or visit the conference webpage at www.environmentsforall.org/SDF14/ for more information.
In the context of the built environment and transportation, Universal Design principles promote systems that are designed to be aesthetic and usable to the greatest extent possible by everyone, regardless of their age, ability, or status in life. From transportation services to Complete Streets, addressing the mobility needs of the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and children and youth—in a way that is appealing to all residents and visitors—ensures design and use that is equitable, flexible, and intuitive for all.
Community Mobility & Universal Design will include an open house/resource fair and presentations related to Universal Design and mobility. The agenda includes:
· Real Life Mobility Challenges—slideshow and discussion facilitated by Alex O'Reilly, Co-Chair, King County Mobility Coalition
· Beyond ADA: Designing Transportation Systems for All Ages and Abilities
o ADA Basics—Joy Jacobson, ADA Compliance, City of Seattle
o Principles of Universal Design—Scott Starr, SMR Architects
o Special Needs Transit & Transportation Services—Matthew Weidner, Planner, Accessible Services, King County Metro Transit
