*For Distribution* Measles in King County
· Public Health is investigating a suspected case of measles, possibly connected to a growing measles outbreak in Clark County in the Vancouver and Portland area. Health experts are concerned that measles could spread at large events, schools or other public places. Measles are very contagious and can cause serious illness, especially in young children, pregnant women, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Fortunately, the measles vaccine (MMR) is very effective in preventing measles.
· Most people in our area have immunity to the measles through vaccination. However, anyone who has not been vaccinated or has not had the measles may be at risk. Information about possible exposure to measles in King County can be found at: https://publichealthinsider. com/2019/01/23/measles- investigation-in-king-county/
· If anyone has not been vaccinated for measles and develops an illness with fever or an unexplained rash, they should call their healthcare provider and avoid leaving the home.

“Measles is a highly contagious disease and if you don’t have immunity, you can get it just by being in a room where a person with measles has been. Fortunately, the measles vaccine is very effective. Two doses of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine provides over 95% protection against measles and that protection is long lasting.” – Dr. Jeff Duchin, Health Officer for Public Health – Seattle & King County
