Car vs bicyclist

RantWoman guesses she was supposed to come on the scene of the fatal car vs bicyclist accident one night recently. RantWoman is deeply sorry.

RantWoman had the option of a bus stop adjacent to her departure point for buses that would take awhile or a bus stop further away for a bus with a half-hour headway but a more direct route. RantWoman chose the latter so she guesses she is somehow supposed to have come upon the corner all taped up with police tape. There were flashing lights and a dark vehicle. Between RantWoman fog and the darkness, RantWoman could see little of any use except the flashing lights on the police car.

The entire corner was taped off in such a way that RantWoman was either going to need to detour around the block or duck under the corner of the taped-off area. RantWoman is grateful for an observant officer who gave RantWoman permission just to duck under the tape and continue toward her bus stop.

For RantWoman's trouble, at the bus stop, RantWoman learned that she had just passed by the scene of a fatal car vs bicyclist accident. The bicyclins was going too fast. The car didn't stop or didn't see. There was nothing left to do but pray--and have a pang for all the day-glo-wearing, helmet clad two-wheeled road warriors in RantWoman's life.

  1. As far as I know, there is no speed limit for a bicyclist, or if there is one, it is the same as for vehicles. Those flashy tail lights that can be mounted under the seat are a life saver though. Sadly, most drivers (the ones here at least) think that they have the right of way over bicyclists and pedestrians and that if they don't get out of the way, it is "their own fault" if they get hit.

Please tell me this is just northern Idaho....

  2. Heh. There are some pretty militant bicyclists including serious bicycle commuters in Seattle so I HOPE things are a little better than in northern ID. Scary for you though.
