CENTRAL DISTRICT RESIDENT RUNS FOR KING CONSERVATION DISTRICT SUPERVISOR
Jennifer Bacon, a resident of Seattle’s Central District, is running as a candidate for the King Conservation District (KCD) Board of Supervisors.
KCD is a non-regulatory agency providing technical expertise and conservation programs to all district landowners. The agency is funded through a combination of special assessments and state grants. While they are best known for their work with livestock operations, KCD also provides support for city dwellers pursuing backyard conservation.
Bacon holds a Master’s Degree in Environment and Community from Antioch University. She is deeply involved in the environmental and gardening communities in the Seattle area. In 2011, she completed the Master Composter/Soil Builder program at Seattle Tilth and has been an active Tilth volunteer ever since. Working with Tilth’s Southeast Programs team, Bacon is establishing active composting at the Rainer Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands. She was also involved with Clean Greens Farm and Market, aiding the establishment of Community Supported Agriculture that brought produce from a Duvall farm to Central District residents.
When asked why she’s running, Bacon says, “There is currently no urban voice on the board. I will bring an urban perspective and make connections between rural and urban conservation.” As an example, Bacon notes that “If we can help landowners mitigate urban runoff, we can facilitate drainage in rural areas and improve salmon habitat at the same time.” Bacon’s endorsements include Alex Steffen, local author and sustainability expert, Rev. Dr. Robert Jeffrey, Sr, founder of Clean Greens Farm and Market, as well as Luke Woodward, farmer and owner of the Oxbow Center for Sustainable Agriculture in Carnation.
Historically, turnout has been low for this little-known election. In 2011, fewer than 2500 voters participated in the election countywide. State law requires the election to be held in the first quarter of the year, and to minimize expenses it is administered by a third party Election Supervisor rather than King County Elections. Bacon hopes to see higher turnout this year, saying that she plans to engage citizens around the county to improve awareness about KCD’s important work.
This is the second year the election will be held online. Constituents will not receive ballots in the mail, but must access www.kingcd.org between February 28th and March 13th in order to vote. In person voting will be available at the District’s Renton office from 9am-9pm on March 13th.
