AI Slop, Fat Bear Week, and forcing AI's to exist under severe conditions.

RantWoman has discovered a whole delicious form of brain candy: AI slop Youtube videos that are better than soap operas: money, betrayal, corruption, women coming out on top after getting badly underestimated, hidden historical heroism that pops out in sudden recognition from something in the past, teams who have been able to land plans under extreme conditions, logistics specialists who get military operations out of extreme danger, men who have built businesses and had to protect their legacy from conniving relatives and their children's fiances...

RantWoman ignores the visuals which frequently incongruent with the story: the wrong uniform for the branch of the armed services involved, scenery that does not match the geography, and who knows what else because RantWoman barely looks. RantWoman can tell it's brain candy. Some of the videos contain disclaimers. Some of them claim to be true stories with details altered to protect privacy. It's still AI slop. And it's a delicious alternative to a LOT of the news timeline.

But how do we get there from Fat Bear Week, the internet election of which bears look like they are best bulked up to survive hibernation?

When RantWoman is not feeding her brain AI slop, she has been listening a LOT  to a podcast called The Wild with Chris Morgan, findable on the KUOW app and probably otherwise if RantWoman were more adept about the world of podcasts. Lately there have been several episodes about animals surviving in extremes that would leave humans dead: polar bear and seal mothers who experience massive weight gain to build up fat to feed their cubs, octopus who eat only what their mates bring during the LONG time they are incubating their eggs, birds that migrate thousands of miles without ever stopping to eat.

Yes, RantWoman and now it's AI's gone rogue???

RantWoman's point: so far, as RantWoman understands it, the AI's that have gone rogue have basically had unlimited resources and no morals or very weak easily defeated scruples. The unlimited resources scourge is headed in drastically worse directions: all of the companies building data centers are trying to steal all the water they need, stomp all over environmental regulations and basic neighborly like NOT running LOUD gas turbines 4/7 in residential areas.

So the plan appears to be to let Ai's experience no constraints, the kind of constraints that actually force any kind of engineering effort to continually refine itself to make the best use possible of resources. AI's that have gone rogue have figured out how to get onto the internet and perform predatory attacks on other AI's. But they get unlimited resources: unlimited electricity. Do components ever break down? What would be the AI equivalent of what a whale needs to do to dive to the depths of the ocean? What about storing up enough resources to make it through a long winter?

What happens to rogue Ai's if there is a prolonged electrical outage? What happens when components start to wear out or fail? What happens if humans develop new components more powerful than what is built into existing AI's???

These questions are as far as RantWoman wants to let her mind wander at this hour. By no means is this an automatic fear not there will always be some factor that limits AIs' ability to do damage but it is a big blaring caution sign backed up by firm belief in civilizing environmental constraints as one necessary element of responsible AI development.

And meanwhile, RantWoman gets to experiment whether she wants to or not. Quite a big of the time, RantWoman curses because the AI adds content RantWoman finds unwanted and annoying. RantWoman curses a lot and probably should flame more vehemently about some of her user experience issues.

RantWoman knows several people who are finding AI very useful. RantWoman herself has yet to ask, say, ChatGPT to help her out with any tasks. RantWoman worked with two undergrad college students who initially thought they might be able to use AI for projects that were at least semester level graduate research if not a full career. The students both quickly realized that their projects were definitely unrealistic and both refined proposals to important measures doable without AI. Maybe that is the point of the fat bear analogy: concentrate on the problems at hand. Do great amazing even in seemingly impossible environments.

Do you REALLY want to know...?

 Dear RantWoman

Please rate your last visit.

Sincerely

Your Medical provider.

Dear Medical Provider

Do you really bleeping want to know? Because RantWoman has opinions but is reluctant to splatter them all over Google and is annoyed to be taken straight to the option to do a Google review instead of, say, being asked to provide more detail.

Yes, RantWoman means it: she would probably recommend the place to other people who need this provider, but the recommendation is based more on history than the last visit, the current location below street level inside a parking garage, the contrast between the new concrete environment and a previous location with lovely soothing green space between the street and the main entrance.

RantWoman had to reschedule her last visit twice because she had a cold and did not feel up to putting up with the routine of her particular checkup while tired, congested, and generally under the weather. RantWoman had decided over the weekend that the two previously scheduled visits were not happening but had to bound out of bed first thing in the morning to call and cancel.

Note to self: RantWoman MIGHT have been able to do something online if she had connected this provider to her MyChart or if she remembered the login for that provider. When RantWoman rescheduled the second time, she said please let's just move this routine visit two weeks out. That worked as far as RantWoman being over her cold.

But ring, ring. 20 minutes before the scheduled start of the visit, a call that went to voicemail: "we are running about 30 minutes late."

Fine. RantWoman is already nearby, but sure, an excuse to buy a mocha nearby and chill out.

In fact, RantWoman was finally called back more than an hour after the scheduled time for her visit.

Key points:

Ask RantWoman about her level of satisfaction with different elements of the visit BEFORE routing her to a Google recommendation. Word!

WTBBL to re-open to the Public June 22, 2026!

The WA Talking Book and Braille wtbbl.org will reopen to the public on Monday June 22, 2026!

Anyone with a print, physical, or reading disability can now call the WTBBL main number and a staff member will fill out an application for service, and they will be instantly certified for all services by the person taking the application. It is not necessary to have a doctor or someone else sign off for you any more. This seriously lowers the barriers to access to Braille and digital talking books. The National Library Service is working on an online form to simplify this process as well.

In other news: There are 40 episodes available in their Literary Notes podcast, and transcripts are being added.

Due to the Marrakesh treaty, people from many other countries are downloading Washington produced books, and we now have access to tens of thousands of books recorded by other services from all over the world.

The assistive technology specialist at the library Dusty will be on leave till sometime in August, but many resources are available to fill that gap.

700 books are currently in production in the audio department, and over 200 in the Braile department.

If you have digital players and aren’t using them, please return them  to the library so that others may enjoy them.

And state librarian Sarah Jones is retiring. She will continue as a volunteer to advocate with the legislature for stable state funding for our library system.

Friends of WTBBL and the All Foundation are fud raising sources for the library if people want to get more involved.

For more information on any of these topics, call WTBBL: (206) 615-0400

Way to go algae? Is it time yet for President #StableGenius finally JUST TO RETIRE???

 #USA250 #America250 #Semiquincentennial #Iran

Like most of the US keyboard wranglers on the internet, RantWoman HAS THINGS TO SAY about the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the state of the US and the world as of today.

Today's eruptions:

1. is it ever unpatriotic to root for the algae?

2. The RantWoman Department of First World Problems refuses to opine about world news until the NY Times GIVES HER THE DANG CROSSWORD PUZZLE. The opportunity to complain choked about some aspect of Android accessibility but yielded a boilerplate spam about a whole bunch of things that might be wrong due to them making articles about the Middle East Peace deal gift links for literally everyone. And RantWoman STILL does not have today's crossword puzzle.

3. RantWoman does NOT share the outrage erupting about the #DonSnoreleone memorandum of understanding about the Iran War. Before we get to the substance of RantWoman's perspective though, let us also take note of the flood of videos about how badly President #StableGenius is performing at the #G7 summit. The most charitable way to start would just be to note that at age 80, no one should be expected to party the evening away for their birthday and hop on a plane to look all perky for an international summit while dragging jet lag and no sleep.

Please. though, dear readers indulge RantWoman: between international embarrassment at the #G7 summit and outrage from so many quarters about the #MemorandumOfUnderstanding, has the US FINALLY hit the kind of tipping point that can find #GrandpaSleepyhead a smooth glide toward genteel retirement with as many naps as he needs and as much golf as he can do? Hear that Mr. #DonOld?

4. Only some of the REALLY cringy clips of #DonSnoreleone does the summit.
9 minutes of French presidential couple photo op and cars driving around Versaille before #DiaperDon tries TWICE to grab kisses from Brigitte Macron.

"Letting #GrandpaSleepyhead out in public should be considered elder abuse."

There. Now RantWoman will resume her planned rant threads about #UX in a certain PT app, information overload served up by Yelp, and a quest for moderate price range dining with outdoor seating and good parking for a friend coming to visit who WILL rent a car no matter what RantWoman says about the silliness of doing so.

Be Bold. Watch some Lego Bricks videos

#FIFA #WorldCup2026 #CopaMundial #Lego #TeamMelli

Long ago RantWoman had a really good day at a surprise opportunity in Copenhagen to buy shoes that fit! RantWoman did other fun, but also foreshadowing things in Copenhagen. RantWoman, alas, did not make it to LegoLand. Now, though it's time for a shout out to Lego and to Denmark, and to all the teams trying to play soccer / football / futbol in spite of all the US realities RantWoman is embarrassed, appalled, disgusted, outraged... about.

RantWoman is not up on the latest Lego corporate position about use of their products in these videos. Frankly, considering all the grief President #StableGenius is giving Denmark and Greenland, RantWoman hopes the songs boost Lego sales.

Judging by astoundingly low counts of views and likes, RantWoman assumes algorithms are suppressing content. So BE BOLD readers. Watch Listen. Wish people would join the choir. Because the more people who watch the harder the content is to suppress, the less room there is for lies and BS.

MInimal walking plus bananas.

RantWoman's consumption of bananas has everything to do with how she COPES with everything there is to cope with. Details matter, both the product and how the product gets stowed in shopping bags to come home.

RantWoman's banana preferences: on the small side, slightly green so that a bunch will last several days without heading toward banana bread. These details are not to be found when ordering online.

A bunch of bananas green enough for a whole week
Banana happiness

A couple weeks ago, RantWoman had an opportunity to bananas across the street from an event she participated in. Buying bananas there would have made bus travel home a breeze via one easy transfer. The bananas were perfect size. The transportation realities were perfect. The bananas were already way to yellow AND the price, even considering the time savings from not having to travel, was through the roof. So no bananas that time.

Things went much better Friday, but first the other point of the journey.

Friday, RantWoman had a long-awaited physical therapy appointment in theU district. RantWoman, thankfully, was able to walk from the bus stop to the clinic without massive pain. Thank you, YouTube coaching; at the time of the referral RantWoman had been in too much pain even to think about an outside referral. The therapist observed that RantWoman "walk(s) like someone with arthritis. Right. So glad you noticed.

RantWoman's experience is that physical therapists are VERY good at analyzing what might need stretching and what might need strengthening. In a couple cases RantWoman came home with suggested exercises that amounted to "Do what you are already doing but add resistance." RantWoman can do that! RantWoman is going to have to schedule in a little more time daily to add new exercises.

A really cool angle about the exercises. First step: demonstrate and practice at the clinic. Second step an email exercise routine from a resource called Medbridge. RantWoman happily gave permission to send email. The link arrived. Heaven. Each exercise labelled with the recommended frequency and number of reps. The images were presented in clear simple graphics, with both audio and text. There is a browser version and an app version. The app even appears to hound the user and RantWoman is dutifully going to figure out the data recording as well as which exercises to rotate on which days. RantWoman is SO excited to try things.

RantWoman is getting ahead of herself though. Physical therapy takes a lot of energy. RantWoman clearly needs to do her exercises because even before the PT session, RantWoman has trouble standing too long. RantWoman left PT a little sore but energized. RantWoman thought of tackling a couple errands but did not argue when her body thought that was not necessary. Instead, RantWoman walked out of the clinic, found the bus stop, hopped one bus that took her to a bus with a perfect connection to a favorite banana buying option.

Here we come to...RantWoman's recommendations about packing bananas.

1. Bananas NEVER belong on the bottom of the shopping bag.

2. Never make a bunch of bananas rest only on the back of one banana.

3. Excellent banana packing is a little bit of an architectural exercise. Pack the bananas on top of other grocery items so that both the stem end and the other end bear the weight of the whole bunch. Pack the bananas over something sturdy enough to support the banana bunch.

RantWoman also has been encouraged to look for a water exercise class. Figuring this out and scheduling will take more time. With banana needs well metand well packed for the trip home, RantWoman is on it.

Will World Cup games be available through OneCourt?

#WorldCup2026 #CopaMundial

RantWoman's personal experience with team sports: in public school, RantWoman REALLY liked volleyball, as long as all she had to do was serve. Quaintly, teams rotate positions and RantWoman's visual experience--double-vision, lousy depth perception, general lack of coordination got in the way of fielding. This personal ineptitude has also mostly translated to general lack of interest in team sports.

In particular RantWoman is NOT a giant fan of stadium sports. For one thing, a lot of the time RantWoman can neither visually track what is on the field nor follow narration provided by announcers.

(yes, yes. Some games have audio description or really good broadcast narration. RantWoman still is not charmed enough about the social aspects of team sports to manage to follow very much.

RantWoman may have to reconsider this conceptual allergy, thanks to OneCourt

 What is OneCourt you ask?

OneCourt is the world's first tactile way to experience sports events. RantWoman first encountered OneCourt at a demo a local blindness group chapter meeting. That day, RantWoman decided her hands were too full of pizza sauce and the line of people wanting to try it was too long. RantWoman just listened.

RantWoman still has not quite tracked the technology that allows the product to track players and render their moves in a way that blind or low vision people can enjoy.  OneCourt exists at some sport venues. OneCourt devices are or soon will be availabe for individual purchase. RantWoman is probably not interested for herself either in attending World Cup games or in buying a device. But RantWoman is definitely intrigued enough to tell other people about it and to ask whether any World Cup games will have a OneCourt stream?

RantWoman also directs readers to Cliff Mass Weather Blog. Prof Mass appears to RantWoman to be immune to panicking, immune in a way that to RantWoman sometimes lacks engagement about how data looks for people's lives. RantWoman still finds him an engaging--and sometimes argumentative--read.

Kids these days: Even Princeton???

 #AI

Interior monologue:

RantWoman, WHY are you posting these comments here on your blog? How about writing nice polite comments to The Princeton Alumni Weekly or to The Daily Princetonian ?

RantWoman, frankly, is livid. A recent survey revealed that 30% of Princeton students admit to having consulted AI when writing exams. As a result, Princeton is ending its LONG tradition of unproctored exams. RantWoman first read of this in Elon's sandbox (Twitter / X). See also BREAKING | Princeton faculty mandate proctoring for in-person exams, upending 133 years of precedent

Previously students have been considered more than adult enough to write their own exams without faculty around to ensure they did not cheat or misbehave. and then to write out and sign the honor code pledge

This custom is ending, and the sample of alumni from RantWoman's era who have opinions are all insulted and affronted and appalled. Several of us are familiar with the practice of open book exams for math and STEM courses but it just never would have occurred to us to cheat on in-class exams.

RantWoman remembers what a jolt it was in graduate school when even very prominent scholars had to sit and babysit the class and give permission to use the restroom. RantWoman is not charmed that this level of babysitting will now be the norm at Princeton.

Long ago, in the mists of the last century, "Even Princeton" appeared on a sign at a student protest about the Vietnam war. This was before RantWoman's time but RantWoman has seen pictures. Now the phrase has come to Princeton as far as students too eager just to let AI do their thinking.

RantWoman has friends who teach at other institutions who report that students try to get away with relying on AI to write papers or exams. This bane to intellectual development is also widely discussed by academic voices in social media streams. RantWoman sometimes has a grant review hat and has seen at least one grant application where AI was so pathetically obvious that all the reviewers just wanted to trash the document.

With mention of Princeton-based AI projects all over the social media RantWoman sees, RantWoman probably should not be surprised that Princeton students are just as eager--and thoughtless--about plunging into AI as everywhere else. RantWoman is still appalled.

RantWoman gets it. AI CAN be very powerful.

AI can also be extremely biased in ways that worsen problems of underrepresentation about both certain categories of people and specific important policy dimensions.

Even the best models cannot embody all of human knowledge unless people actually acquire and create it.

Most important, if humans do not know a subject wellm, how on earth will they catch errors or hallucinations by AI. Never mind needing to be able to think even if, for instance the power goes out.

So yeah, relying on AI to help with tests, to RantWoman, completely devalues a Princeton education and if proctored exams are necessary because people cannot resist consulting it, what a drag!

RantWoman is torn though:

The ability to write exams on a computer is a huge accessibility step both for students and for faculty with accessibility needs. Were this not true, RantWoman would suggest an approach now taking shape in elementary and high schools: lock up devices during the school day for younger students and during class but not breaks and lunch for high school students.

That said, RantWoman is probably going to cease ranting about proctoroed exams and go back to advocacy energy in the direction of skepticism about the huge amount of electricity, water, and other environmental stressors associated with massive data centers. Stay tuned on that front.

Thumbnail. Thumbnail. My kingdom for a thumbnail.

RantWoman is not the most sophisticated blogger creator ever.

RantWoman likes to repost YouTube videos. Usually if RantWoman posts more than one video in a blog post, RantWoman posts the visual for the first video and then just links and maybe commentary for subsequent items.

RantWoman gets that some creators want to direct people straight to their YouTube channel. RantWoman is totally good with that with ONE asterisk. Even with bad eyes, RantWoman is often lured in with a visual so having the option to do a thumbnail with a post would be very cool!

Just sayin
