I keep sitting with two questions:

Where are the mining companies that operate in the DRC? Surely Ebola is bad for business and I naively think it would be EXCELLENT if they can pitch in for supplies and education. I find it disgusting to see lots of comments basically throwing up people's hands because public health is hard because of mining. If mining contracts are worth anything, shouldn't there be parallel investment in local public health?

Also, why send people from the US to Kenya rather than home to all the supposedly top notch facilities there are in te US? I saw one report that the President has ordered the US military to build a facility able to handle 50 people and to build it within 7 days. What's that about? Are there people doing covert ops that need protection? and why Kenya? What does Kenya get out of the deal?

For the future: RantWoman is not sure there is a link to a source, but a vaccine exists for the Asian variant of hantavirus. Does it work at all for the Andes strain? How hard would it be to make a vaccine for people living or travelling in areas where the Andes virus is endemic?

Short version: is hantavirus something for the whole world to worry about? RantWoman's view: even if one does not live in areas where the virus is endemic, maybe some worry makes sense. RantWoman personally has a LONG list of worries and hantavirus definitely is nowhere near the top. People who have some risk of exposure isolate, monitor symptoms, and get medical help. People who are just worried might want to summon some of whatever energy got them through COVID. Also consider masking and social distancing, as already still practiced by many people for many reasons.

RantWoman wants to express appreciation for everyone on the MV Honius dealing with the #HantaVirus outbreak. To say the least, not a fun direction for a cruise to go. RantWoman especially wants to offer appreciation, again, for bearing with policies that are inconvenient but intended to help prevent any wider outbreak.

Ditto to all the public health officials and medical professionals working in responsible ways to identify people at risk, do contact tracing, and follow up for the virus incubation period of up to 8 weeks. Unlike #COVID at the beginning of the #pandemic, hantavirus is well studied. so far evidence is that it does not spread nearly as easily as COVID. Although patients' condition can change very quickly, once signs of infection are detected, appropriate treatment can make a big difference abotu survival.

The world does NOT need another reason for people to be scared.  RantWoman learned RantMom's memorial that she and her pastor became global poster stars for airborne #COVID transmission by people, like RantMom at the time, who are asymptomatic. So RantWoman is just a little twitchy about people who have been on a boat together for weeks already and a disease that apparently has a long incubation time.

(RantMom) became good friends with the first Ida Culver Ravenna Resident to die of COVID. She tested positive herself cleared the virus and did not develop symptoms. The pandemic lockdown was very hard for everyone. The staff's meticulous observance of rules and safety practices as well as use of vaccines as soon as they became available ensured that COVID did not hit that community nearly as hard as other retirement facilities. 

(RantMom) and several other residents of Ida culver Ravenna moved to The Lakeshore, along with numerous other residents of Ida Culver Ravenna. At the Lakeshore, residents enjoyed an expansive view of Lake Washington and resident bald eagles nesting in a tree near the dining room. Art shows, special speakers,  music and dance performances and other activities kept life as lively as (RantMom)  wanted. 

The last year of RantMom's life at the Lakeshore was rough: Her younger brother died of prostate cancer. She had a lingering bout of actual COVID, not just testing positive and clearing the virus without symptoms as she had done previously. 

Other chronic issues were becoming more and more draining. Even so, she continued to volunteer weekly at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. To RantMom, this was a means to pay forward the excellent medical care she had received during her multiple battles with cancer.

RantMom's last few weeks were a blur of hospital, skilled nursing, and ultimately placement at the Agape Senior Care at Montlake -- with its extremely loving directors and staff -- where she passed away peacefully thirty years and six months to the day after (RantDad).
