Awesome suggestions for accessible holiday parties and other events, just in time for a party RantWoman already knows will fall short in some areas..
Rooted in Rights article about Accessible holiday events
Additional RantWoman observations based on this weekend's activities.
Dear EVERYONE who wants to perfume themselves this time of year,
PLEASE go easy on the scents, like the BARE minimum you absolutely must have. For instance RantWoman MUST have her lip balm or her lips will fall off. RantWoman also is currently using a scented shampoo. But hand lotion and deodorant are both unscented. RantWoman deeply appreciates it when others show similar restraint. RantWoman just coughs and sneezes; other people get asthma attacks or migraines. To say the least these do not enhance the holiday experience.
Thank you for noting this.
Sincerely, RantWoman
Dear Everyone who uses restrooms:
Please be aware that restrooms can have MANY accessibility barriers for people who use wheelchairs but also for other people. Please do not make assumptions about what people can or cannot do. Try to have your Ally ears on, to offer help but be respectful if the help is declined, Also try not to point and gawk. Try to talk to people directly, not just talk about them.
Dear People hosting performances
Please offer RantWoman a program EVERY TIME even though she travels with Amabassador Thwack the white cane.
Even though RantWoman squints horribly and holds things inches from her nose, RantWoman VERY MUCH likes to read programs. Sometimes this is unfeasible. Sometimes programs are laid out so nicely with good use of white space and decent sized font that RantWoman is delighted. That was the case for a wonderuful concert. RantWoman can ALWAYS handle more delight.
Sincerely,
RantWoman
Dear Troup of Musicians
Travelling with your own songsheets is way cool especially if you collect and re-use them several times, Now, could you PLEASE consider making 2-3 copies in large print, say 20 point?
Thank you in advance.
Sincerely, RantWoman
