I pray for....

RantWoman and her soul are trying to herd together the sort of civic thoughts that, in RantWoman's experience, sometimes muddle out of meditations during "the most segregated hour in the US," Sunday worship RantWoman is a great believer in prayer across differences and this week's local social media offer multiple opportunities to sift through messy thoughts.. RantWoman's soul is, um, maybe not the best metaphors, taking no prisoners while popping off about things in her Twitter feed.

The passing of Mary Kay Letourneau who died of cancer this week.

Let's see.

--There is the dying of cancer part and the impact of that on people around her. For anyone in the public eye, saying "RIP" as @SeattlePD Chief Carmen Best did in a tweet, seems, at least to RantWoman like a kind of basic gesture. That thing about deleting the tweet about the topic, ummm...?

--Saying RIP is a basic gesture. There is an estranged first husband and 4 children from that marriage. RantWoman also vaguely remembers and is not going to go look up mention of Letourneau's father showing signs of some kind of mental illness. So RIP and remember the survivors.

--Saying RIP is a basic gesture. There is the eww yuck angle of her rape of, conceiving two children with and marrying one of her sixth grade students. So RIP and remember the survivors.

In other words, Letourneau leaves behind whole swaths of emotional upheaval in many people's lives. Just say RIP. Remember, pray for the survivors! That is a lot and good for Chief Best for doing the first part. Maybe she and other people trying to pray together can also throw in some prayers for the family of #CharleenaLyles too.

And now get back to bigger problems for Chief Best! Stay tuned.

David Horsey: Anger Translator for Mayor Durkan

RantWoman has invited Google to offer an image description and will test to see what if anything comes up.
Actually, nothing so RantWoman interprets a David Horsey Cartoon as follows.

CM Kshama Sawant bursts into Mayor Durkan's office carrying a torch. Caption over door: The Rivals

Mayor Durkan "(Sigh) Hello Kshama. Do you have an appointment or is this a home invasion?"

RantWoman begs to differ with the yowling on Twitter:

Maybe RantWoman is missing something but RantWoman does not see any more racism than  the condescension that comes across in the mayor's tone in this cartoon. RantWoman thinks the term "home invasion" is perfectly fine considering that CM Sawant has led demonstrations to Mayor Durkan's home neighborhood AND invited protestors to city hall. RantWoman sort of hopes a council member inviting the public to City Hall would never be considered a home invasion by the mayor, but RantWoman can well imagine a good Anger Translator phrasing things that way anyway.

RantWoman also saw one tweet, she thinks from a man, yowling about sexism. Huh? There are two strong women. For a man to tell women this is sexism, no matter how much he might want to be congratulated for "getting it," just comes across to RantWoman as mansplaining, or sexism. Would the man even comment on the gender of the participants if both were men? RantWoman for her part will refrain from characterizing the exchange as a two strong women cat fight.

RantWoman is a stiff middle-aged over-educated and opinionated white woman. RantWoman has voted for CM Sawant. RantWoman thinks people keep voting for her exactly BECAUSE she is willing to be confrontational, though the late-cycle please buy me a candidate cash dump to Sawant's opponent definitely did NOT help him. RantWoman has also voted for Mayor Durkan. RantWoman wishes many things were different in Seattle politics right now, but would not necessarily have changed her vote. RantWoman also, honestly, does not see the point of recalling the mayor. There are plenty of crises. There is a strong city council. Seattle activists need to recognize some serious regional and state issues. Recalling the mayor in the midst of COVID and a recession does not seem to RantWoman like the biggest priority.

There are plenty of problems no one cam police their way out of. Housing affordability anyone? Community mental health instead of jails and prisons!

If solving these issues means asking local billionaires whether they can squeak by on say $400,000 a minute instead of $800,000 . minute or whatever figure was recently quoted, the city needs to do it. That tax needs to shift to a regional component and evolution of a more progressive tax system statewide.

There. RantWoman will now go play in some sunshine!
