King County Council Member Rod Dembowski's reminder email says or has links to all that needs to be said for now about the election for the King Conservation District board of Supervisors
Last Chance to Vote for King County Conservation District Supervisor
RantWoman DEFINITELY urges readers to VOTE.
Readers will note a large number of candidates. RantWoman is not going to look up whether, due to the large number of candidates there might be a runoff election. However, in the realm of election innovations, a race with many candidates for RantWoman cries out for the introduction of ranked choice voting. Under ranked choice voting, voters vote first, second, and perhaps third preferences. The goal would be to get to two candidates who reflect voter preferences broadly enough to be confident that the final winner represents some level of preference by a majority of voters. But RantWoman does not get to make new laws at this late date for this election.
And speaking of still not getting to make up new rules, RantWoman notes a continuing problem for people who use screen readers on mobile devices. WA State law requires a physical ballot and a voter signature on a separate page. The election page can generate this for electronic submission. On mobile devices, though, voters who use screen readers have to be able to turn off their screen readers, sign anywhere on the screen and then turn their screen reader back on. RantWoman does not know about other screen reader users, but RantWoman does not retain information about the short cut to turn Talkback on and off. RantWoman also considers this a lot to ask even though the print out paper, sign and mail option impinges even more on independence. Some blind people might have tools to help them identify which page is the ballot and which needs a signature, but many blind people will not.
RantWoman does have enough vision with magnification to render a signature in the required field and send her own ballot speeding off on its way.
