Happy 275th Birthday Princeton: Think environmental sustainability

#Princeton275 #NDEAM #NDEAM2021

Deadlines focus the brain. RantWoman means to post a birthday reflection while it is still Princeton's official birthday at least in RantWoman's time zone.

When a great institution celebrates its 275th birthday many possible essay themes dump out onto one's keyboard. However since the occasion falls during National Disabilties Employment Awareness Month, RantWoman is going to honor the occasion by celebrating the life and work of only one of many talented Princeton alumni with disabilities who RantWoman has met. The guest of honor is Dr. Geerat Vermeij.

RantWoman met Dr. Vermeij at a vertical mentoring conference for people with differnt lifetime experiences of blindness.

A few points stuck out from his presentation.

He first because interested in science and changes in the world's oceans as a child in Holland. Over his lifetime, he can tell that seashells have become thinner. He has quite a bit more to say about climate change and RantWoman encourages her readers to use their search engines.

One example of a barrier he had to overcome: he was a principle researcher on a field study and he had to argue about liability insurance concerns with the project's insurer.

Dr. Vermeij spoke of different activities that contribute to an academic career: he discovered that, with a good reader, he is good at editing journals and less good at administrative tasks.

Dr. Vermeij spoke of having his entire academic history on notecards in Braille. RantWoman was impressed--and RantWoman had to acknowledge that as an adult Braille learner, she was going to have to rely on other ways to make notes.

There is of course much more to be said, but RantWoman is going to stop. Sustainability is on RantWoman's mind and the @Princeton twitter feed brings these two articles for the day.
