Electoral Arithmetic: NO to abolishing the Electoral college

Dear Internet

RantWoman means to follow up about this in more depth than here but....

RantWoman does NOT support abolishing the electoral college. For one thing, getting a constitutional amendment done before 2024 seems extremely unlikely. For another, RantWoman can think of several ways to invest resources that have more potential to energize and mobilize voters.

RantWoman does support prohibiting winner take all electoral slates. This can be done by state legislatures without a constitutional amendment.  Could enough states do this to shift the dynamics of the 2024 election? RantWoman thinks it's worth a try.

States should be allowed to apportion electoral votes in proportion to the popular vote for each party. Divide the total number of votes cast by the number of electors. To score an elector a party would have to attain at least the percentage of the popular votes reflected by the ratio above. RantWoman will think further through arithmetic another time. This would force all parties to campaign differently. To RantWoman, that would be a good thing.

As far as how to keep seditionists from running for re-election, RantWoman wants to look seriously at the 14th amendment and at fitness for office pathways spelled out by the 25th amendment.  Honestly, though, no matter how many democratic fundraisers full of dire pronouncements stream into RantWoman's inbox RantWoman thinks it is going to take creativity and nerve on all sides.

Stay tuned.
