"Americans believe we can disagree with each other and still live in peace with each other."
Ronald Reagan (a good speechwriter), 1987
"Mr. President and Mrs. Allow me to express the hope that the USSR and the US in cooperation with the peoples of the world will take our place in the history of the departing 20th century not only as allies in the defeat of fascism (RU) / Nazism (EN) but also as nations that have paved the way to a safe world free from the threat of nuclear anihilation." Mikhail Gorbachev
Washington DC at summit to sign the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty and begin discussion on the START treaty.
The first election RantWoman was old enough to vote in was the 1980 Ronald Reagan Jimmy Carter contest. At the time RantWoman was not a Reagan fan in the first place. In the second place, RantWoman as a proud Montanan living in NJ remembers ranting at whatever was the news source at the time. The election was called early, before the polls had even closed in the Mountain and Pacific time zones. RantWoman will now file that point of history for further consideration with respect to upcoming elections.
Tonight, though, RantWoman so needed a break from her half-voluntary media diet of gut-wrenching geopolitical and constitutional distress. RantWoman so wants to appreciate:
The mixed blessing of Youtube algorithms that a lot of the time make decent guesses about content RantWoman will appreciate
Two leaders who, for many flaws, both symbolize peaceful transfer of power.
Pomp and circumstance which likely would have bored RantWoman when she was an intern in Washington DC, briefly selling the nuclear freeze door to door and supporting legislative phone banking.
Appropriate use of interpreters
A Presidential Library, not only done well but also reflecting materials in modern media
The opportunity as part of vocational rehabilitation after mid-life vision loss to take a class in consecutive interpreting with the recently retired head of language services at the State Department. Again, not particularly something that would even have existed as a possibility to college-age RantWoman. Interpreter brain is a little flabby late at night as RantWoman writes, but
RantWoman sincerely hopes that the positive sentiments are not just nostalgia.
