The autonomous vehicles are coming.
The autonomous vehicles are coming.
Uh, more like The Autonomous Vehicle Workgroup is coming!
Seems there are LOTS of different policy questions that will need to be
worked out before autonomous vehicles are allowed to operate on WA roads and
the legislature in 2018 told the governor’s office it is time to get started
thinking about these issues.
Speaking as a blind pedestrian, RantWoman is aware that some blind
people are thrilled by the possibility that they will be able to get around, to
“drive” independently. RantWoman on the other hand is a bit of a skeptic,
worried that a quiet electric autonomous vehicle will just be another way for
blind people to get run over more easily. Now, see RantWoman see who she can
recruit to speak to these distinct concerns. And stay tuned to see what comes
out.
RantWoman notes studies that show that Uber and Lyft contribute to
traffic congestion by making it possible for more people to attempt car trips.
RantWoman thinks serving people not previously served is always a positive, but RantWoman sort of
expects the same congestion effects from adding autonomous vehicles to the
traffic mix. RantWoman will be interested to see what comes out as far as
shared rides, autonomous vehicles and ride sharing.
And in the meantime, RantWoman awhile ago had an opportunity for an
autonomous vehicle demo. Here are some, um, sort of irreverent comments about
same.
