Message from the Executive Director: Passage of I-976
The early vote count is in, and it is clear Initiative 976 will be approved. With initial results counted from populace counties like King, Pierce, Snohomish, Spokane, and Clark, I-976 is being approved by nearly 56% tonight.
This is a disappointing outcome as I-976 has far-reaching consequences beyond its face value of just being about $30 car tabs.
The passage of I-976 means tough choices for transit agencies across Washington as the transit community stands to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in state funds. Grant programs such as; Regional Mobility, Rural Mobility, and Special Needs Transportation, are now at risk of severer cuts if not complete elimination. These programs fund critical services and projects across Washington state, providing seniors, students, and commuters with alternative options to get to and from their destinations.
Later this week, the WSTA Board of Directors will meet at their regularly scheduled Board meeting in Leavenworth to discuss WSTA's legal and legislative options and what next steps, if any, the Associations may take. WSTA will communicate when appropriate the direction we will take.
There are dark times now ahead of us, and we are now faced with tough choices, tough priorities, and tough consequences. WSTA is dedicated to protecting our members and our customers and ensuring reliable public transit throughout the state of Washington for a better and brighter future we all deserve and desire.
Please stay tuned for future updates.
Sincerely,
Justin D. Leighton Executive Director - WSTA
