RantWoman left to her own devices probably would never have thought to
order Tactile View tactile graphics software to use with the STAR of Seattle braille embosser.
The actual project that was supposed to materialize to use the software
did not happen for someone else’s staffing reasons. But boy has RantWoman been
having fun, or as much fun as one can have with google images, options to
convert images to black and white, to negative, and to line drawing or some
combination.
Tactile View offers LOTS of cool functions RantWoman has not taken time
to explore. Tactile View also offers what to RantWoman is really satisfying
interaction with the screen reading functions of Zoomtext. RantWoman finds
herself surprised by what gets read, information RantWoman would never find
visually.
Sometimes RantWoman needs to make a tactile graphic at the start of the
day to invoke calm and to keep RantWoman out of various mental ruts. Lately
Rantwoman is also really into fractals for both mathematical and metaphorical
reasons
Mainly RantWoman keeps it really simple starting with guesswork about
what kinds of images will translate well into line drawings and then into
tactile images where key elements can be identified by touch exploration.
RantWoman also has to be careful because what looks visually like it
will be meaningful sometimes does not turn out to be. The images here
illustrate this point. The images to the right and upper right have more detail
than can be reflected at the resolution used by the embosser. RantWoman thinks
the tactile results would illustrate some properties of fractals.
However the graphical image also illustrates the distortions that can occur
when images are stretched to a size different from the original. Everyone gets
to cope and learn.
